In Vedic matchmaking, rashi means the moon sign: the zodiac sign the moon was in at birth. Rashi compatibility is judged mainly through two of the eight guna milan factors. Bhakoot (7 points) looks at how far apart the two moon signs are, and Graha Maitri (5 points) looks at whether the planets that rule those signs are friendly. Together they carry 12 of the 36 points, so rashi matters a lot. It is still only one part of kundli matching, and a sensible family weighs it alongside the full charts and real-life compatibility.

This guide explains how rashi is used, what the common combinations mean, and how to keep it in perspective.

What is rashi, and why the moon sign?

There are 12 rashis: Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces).

Western astrology usually talks about the sun sign. Vedic astrology gives special weight to the moon sign, because the moon is linked with the mind, emotions and temperament, the qualities that shape daily life together. That is why your rashi in a Hindu kundli is often different from the "star sign" in a magazine.

To find your rashi, you need your date, time and place of birth. The moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days, so for most people the date and approximate time are enough. Our guide to reading a kundli for marriage shows where to find it on the chart.

How rashi is used in kundli matching

Guna milan compares eight factors for a total of 36 points. Two of them depend directly on the moon signs.

Bhakoot: the distance between moon signs

Bhakoot counts the position of one partner's moon sign from the other's. Some combinations are considered favourable and score the full 7 points. Three combinations are traditionally considered unfavourable and create Bhakoot dosha:

  • 2/12: the signs are next to each other
  • 5/9: the signs are fifth and ninth from each other
  • 6/8: the signs are sixth and eighth from each other

Combinations such as the same sign (1/1), 3/11, 4/10 and 7/7 (opposite signs) are generally treated as acceptable or good. Bhakoot dosha is often considered cancelled in certain cases, for example when both moon signs are ruled by the same planet or by friendly planets. Our full explainer on Bhakoot dosha covers these cancellations.

Graha Maitri: friendship between sign lords

Each rashi has a ruling planet. Mars rules Mesha and Vrishchika, Venus rules Vrishabha and Tula, Mercury rules Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon rules Karka, the Sun rules Simha, Jupiter rules Dhanu and Meena, and Saturn rules Makara and Kumbha.

Graha Maitri checks whether these two ruling planets are friends, neutral or enemies in traditional astrology. Friendly lords score well and are thought to support mutual understanding. Many astrologers give Graha Maitri extra weight, because it can soften other weaknesses in the match.

Rashi and nakshatra: how they fit together

Each rashi is divided into nakshatras (lunar mansions), and several guna milan factors, such as Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi, depend on the nakshatra rather than the rashi. So two people with the same rashi can still have quite different match scores.

That is why astrologers look at both. Our guide to nakshatra compatibility in marriage explains the nakshatra side in simple terms.

A sensible view of rashi compatibility

Rashi compatibility is meaningful to many families, and it is part of a long tradition. It works best when it is kept in proportion.

  • Look at the whole match, not one factor. A low Bhakoot score may be cancelled, or balanced by strong Graha Maitri and a good total.
  • Ask about cancellations before rejecting a match. Many doshas have recognised exceptions.
  • Remember the people behind the charts. Shared values, respect, family fit and how the two people get on matter enormously. Our article on compatibility beyond kundli looks at these.
  • Avoid pop-horoscope rules. Generic "Leo and Scorpio never work" lists come from sun-sign astrology and are not how Vedic matching works.

If you are consulting an astrologer, prepare a few good questions to ask about a kundli match so you get a clear, balanced answer.

Frequently asked questions

What is rashi in marriage matching?

Rashi is the moon sign, the zodiac sign the moon occupied at the time of birth. In Vedic matchmaking it is used to judge emotional and mental compatibility, mainly through the Bhakoot and Graha Maitri factors of guna milan.

Which rashi combinations are considered bad for marriage?

Traditionally, the 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 positions between the two moon signs create Bhakoot dosha. However, this dosha is often considered cancelled in certain cases, such as when the ruling planets of both signs are the same or friendly.

Is it good if both partners have the same rashi?

The same rashi is generally considered acceptable for Bhakoot. However, some other factors, such as Nadi, depend on the nakshatra, so an astrologer should still check the full match.

Is rashi the same as my sun sign?

No. Vedic astrology uses the moon sign as your rashi, while Western astrology and most magazine horoscopes use the sun sign. The two are often different for the same person.

Can a marriage succeed if rashi compatibility is low?

Yes, many families go ahead when other factors are strong or when the dosha is considered cancelled. Rashi is one part of kundli matching, and values, understanding and family support matter greatly in a successful marriage.
